Words And Pictures

While Max's tattoos are often more conceptual in nature, sometimes he has clients who like to be a bit more literal in their tattoos and chose to include words as well. While bible verse tattoos and rosary tattoos are a fairly common subject matter and request, Max really took the idea and ran with it in a more unique and creative way for this half sleeve tattoo. He played with textures, perspective and layering to create this corinthians tattoo.

This color anchor and lily tattoo incoporated a limited amount of text in reference to the clients loved ones. Sometimes the picture is enough, other times clients prefer to be quite clear with their visual intent by including a clear statement.

This back piece also used text combined with filagree as a create top border. In this case using the lettering of "Live Life" to contrast the clearly macabre tattoo imagery including the graveyard and sculptural angel.

While some say a picture is worth a thousand words, other times clients prefer to let words tell part of their story. We love both variations of tattoos and especiial love seeing clients tattoo visions come together with their tattoo artist for a beautiful cohesive tattoo!

Three Weeks Until Max Departs for Italy

We hate to see Max leave his regular home at our Easthampton, Massachusetts tattoo studio, but it's exciting to watch him venture to our Italian location with Alex de Pase and the full crew at Off the Map Italy. October 13 will be Max's last day at our Easthampton location until mid-December. We'll look forward to Max coming back to us regularly December 11.

Max already has a few tattoo clients lined up for him in Cervignano del Friuli but he would love to gather more Italian tattoo lovers to fill up him time there. There is even still a chance for a lucky client to win a FREE tattoo from Max during his stay.

Aside from tattooing in Italy, Max is also looking forward to attending the World Wide Tattoo Conference, to learn from incredible world renowned tattooers including Shige, Alex De Pase, Jeff Gogue and more! Between this incredible learning opportunity and the inspiration of the area, we imagine Max will be doing some of the most impressive tattoos we've seen from him yet!

The tattoo below was designed with the inspiration "a suitcase full of memories," and we look forward to filling up Max's suitcase with memories, stories, tattoos and beautiful artwork to share with you all during and after his Italian adventures.

If two months feels like a really long time to miss Max, feel free to swing by the studio to see him off, give him a hug, and maybe a tip or two for things he should see, do or experience while abroad! Ciao!

In Progress

Even though there's not always updates, it doesn't mean Max isn't churning away at in progress tattoos. These are a couple of pieces we wanted to share with you!

This Virgin Mary was added on an in progress sleeve that includes other subject matter including cicada, crow and rose tattoos. This client Dave has been diligent and coming in regularly for a little less than a year.

This project is on a wonderful client Wendy. She has roses and filagree extending from her hip, up her ribs and onto her arm. Wendy was another dedicated client that came in consistenly and got this large scale piece to this stage in about 4 full day sessions. Did we mention she's also a tough cookie?

Max took a full day tattoo session for each piece of this tattoo, first working on the crow quarter sleeve, then working on the wolf chest plate. It's yet to be seen what if anything, this client will add on to the tattoo, but we feel inclined to think it's will get bigger over time!

Thanks for looking, and stay tuned for more updates on tattoos and travels!

More Tattoo Works From Italy

When Max was in Italy he had the pleasure of discovering Italian tattoo clients are not shy of getting large pieces, and not only that, they are tough as nails. Both of these large scale tattoos were done in a single session, making for a long day for both Max and his clients.

This shoulder piece brings in inspiration from a wise elder, and a maori warrior. Max included his signature abstract flair to this otherwise realistic portraiture.

This wolf tattoo is a bit more illustrative than Max's usual style, but once again, he managed to incorporate some of his signature style- this time with the filagree add on. This tattoo is also a wonderful example of a primarily black and gray tattoo with a limited use of color. Generally, when clients want black and gray but a splash of color, it's aesthetically best to keep it to just one additional color.

These clients brought great ideas to the table and Max can't what to see what the next round of clients in Italy have dreamed up! Max will be in Italy for two full months, but his tattoo schedule is already filling up! If you want to make sure to secure your trip during Max's next stint in Italy, go ahead and contact our Italian location directly!

Two Months to go until Two Months in Italy!

It's hard to believe we're already counting down to Max's next departure to Italy, but alas, a mere two months from now, Max will be headed back to Cergivgnano del Friuli to spend a full two months at our Italian location from mid October to mid December. Even though it was only his second time visiting our Italian studio in July, he still acquired quite a few wonderful clients and projects to work on.

This beautiful filagree chrysanthemum tattoo will be added onto in the future. In this tattoo Max used the technique of utilizing negative space, rather than color for the focal point of the tattoo.

This next piece incorporated abstract inspiration that Max is generally used to, but incorporated more literal realism and color than he uses regularly. While bird tattoos, eye tattoos, and cherry blossom tattoos aren't the most unusual subject matter, combining the two made this a much more innovative and unique tattoo.

This last tattoo is a take on a "skin rip" tattoo. The client wanted the illusion of armour with some celtic inspiration. The client was willing to sit for a (long) full day and asked that Max incorporate the new tattoo with the existing pieces he had.

Max cannot wait to see what his Italian clients bring him next time around. He would love more filagree tatttoos, architectural inspired tattoos, flower tattoos, and whatever else is brought to the table! If you would like to get tattooed by Max while he's in Italy, make sure to contact to Italy studio to book! Cervignano del Friuli is just a short train ride away from Venice, Rome and Milan, so even if you're not right in town, you're not too far away to get an amazing tattoo!

Help Dakin- Win $300 Toward your Next Tattoo with Max!

Last month we managed to raise $418 for Safe Passage in our brand new community out reach effort, our monthly charity raffle! This one we are offering you the same chance to win a $300 gift certificate to Off the Map, but this month 100% of the proceeds are benefitting Dakin Animal Shelter. We are selling raffle tickets for $1.00 and you can buy as many as you'd like! If you're coming in to get tattooed by Max- make sure you ask about participating!

Max's mother is a veterinarian so animal wellness has always been near and dear to his heart. Incidentally, we don't have any dog or cat tattoos Max has done to share, so instead, how about a super cute elephant tattoo that Max did a while back?!

While Dakin supports more domestic animals, we also showed our love for wildlife in our Animal Tattoos for Endangered Species benefit day this past fall where we raised nearly $5000 for the Arcadia wildlife sanctuary. Below is Max's flash sheet that he contributed to the event. The otter in love with the oyster was one of the biggest hits!

This is a great chance to help our local community and earn a chance to win $300 towards your next tattoo with Max or one of our other talented artists! Call the studio if you'd like more details!

Smooth Sailing

It seems like Max gets an unusually high number of sea and aquatic related tattoos. Maybe it's because Max himself is a water sign...

This huge (and we mean huge,- this client Neal is about 6'4") rib piece is about 5 sessions of varying length in. Neal was one of Max's first clients at Off the Map and Max did a more traditional panther on his other rib cage. Apparently Neal is a glutton for punishment, because ribs are notoriously one of the most notoriously difficult areas to get tattooed. Between the panther and this ship, it seems that Neal keeps challenging Max to pieces outside his usual comfort zone.

It's always fun to see our artists work in various styles.

The ship below is more in the ball park of what Max normally does, but this piece is far from ordinary! Max tattooed this on our very own Rob, who is now one of our dutiful front desk staff members! When Rob started this piece, he was just a client, but apparently he couldn't get enough of us! After spending 50 or so hours with Max and the shop to complete this tattoo, we stole each others hearts, and the rest is history.

Oh, and he ended up with a pretty great torso tattoo as well. Originally this was going to be a haunted ship chest piece, but after viewing a giant octopus at the boston aquarium, Rob decided he wanted more. Thus the epic kraken, ship torso tattoo began! Aside from 50 hours of tattoo time, Rob also pushed through getting his nipple and navel tattooed. Max manages to wrangle some seriously tough clients!

If you're also a fan of these ocean themed tattoos, make sure you take a gander at one of our favorites, the elusive zombie mermaid tattoo, and check out this other news item we recently published with more beach tattoos.

Entrance Into a Dark and Scary Forest

Sometimes clients surprise us with their tattoo concepts, and this was one of those cases. Sarah comes from one of our very favorite families, and her parents are also great clients of ours. They are sweet as pie, so when Sarah came to Max with this creepy and macabre idea, it was a bit of a shock, in the best kind of way! Sarah wanted a little girl with her teddy bear walking into a scary forest, and this is what Max started with.

She came back in this past weekend to get more work done and extend her thigh piece up and back. The skull below is Max's concept for expanding the tattoo. Max often makes loose sketches for his tattoos. Sometimes multiple versions of them before a more final rendering of the piece. Having a few options gives his clients more insight on what their options might be, and helps them to visualize the final tattoo.

The extension of the piece went up onto her hip. We find pieces like this tend to keep growing, often larger than the client originally thought they wanted. Taking the plunge to large scale tattoo work can be scary, but generally clients just want to keep going bigger!

Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for more posts about this tattoo. Max has even been updating to instagram a bit more so give a follow to @Maximiliantattoo

Examiner Article: Max Rothert draws on history, conflict and flesh

Back in May, Max had a wonderful write up in the Examiner written by Morgan Kwok. You can check out the links, or read on for the full article.

Such is the nature of our time that the modern human experience is one saturated with images. This point is made redundant by the florescent teeth and indignant brows of television morality, in which the term ‘bombardment’ is overused. It is nonetheless worth considering what constant consumption does to art. A human impulse to labor over images and objects is worrisome if the time permitted the objects is becoming ever more fleeting. There are some image practices that defy this habit, and require commitment from audience as well as artist. How better to express ardor for an artist than to dedicate yourself as a canvas, and to become animate art.

Today he is working on a complex sleeve based on Huxley’s ‘Island’. Off The Map Tattoo is known for the creative versatility of its artists. It has long since been Rothert’s inclination to view tattooing as an art of conversation between figure and imagery. ‘I’m not imposing a flat image onto the body,’ he says, while carefully wiping the shoulder of his canvas. ‘I like my work to have a visual vibration, which requires the use of different perspectives.’ He describes how forced perspective is particularly effective in the upper part of the arm, and how the forearm lends itself well to a fish-eye or worms-eye perspective. Dark feathers begin to blossom under his hands, curling in cunning drama across the skin.‘I sculpt into the skin’ says Maximilian Rothert, acclaimed artist of Off The Map Tattoo (Easthampton, MA). ‘My process involves understanding each individual’s form, and drawing on their natural flow.’ From his early life in Florida to living in Germany, Rothert was constantly drawing, a skill that earned him a place at the Art Institute of Boston. His unique flair for macabre elegance and strong chiaroscuro was a hard pill for many tattoo studios to swallow. ‘I was laughed out of some shops’ he said, with a smile and shake of the head. It was clear that most establishments were looking for mainstream doodlers of cleavage and anchors and not the artist who would go on to create the strange beauty of ‘Zombie Mermaid’. At long last, he got his chance in Connecticut where he took on an apprenticeship.

It is one of the great pleasures in life to hear a craftsperson discuss the history of their trade, and Rothert is no different in regards to the history of art. He sites the elaborate Rococo movement as one of his primary influences, and though much of his work is thematically distant from the flouncing French aristocrats, something of the detail and clustered vibrancy remains. German Rococo in particular appeals to Rothert by way of its attentive flowers and genius for ‘organic ornamentation’.

His taste is by no means limited to the 18th century, the Hudson River School, Realism and Surrealism all have their place. Each influence he lists has a strict scrutiny of composition, which serves the sculptor turned tattoo artist well. Indeed, his history of figurative art in clay and plaster is comes through in his allotment of the art. The most important objects of a piece feature are given the most prominent features of the figure.

Rothert, having recently returned from a trip to Italy, had many observations to make about the differences between tattoo culture in Europe and the United States. Italy was the place where he discovered the macchiato, and a completely different tattoo disposition. ‘They don’t have a tradition of Americana and sailor tattooing that we have, which gives it more of fine art feel’ he says.

Tattooing is a strangely devotional art form, as it involves an offering of flesh to the gift of an artist. The skill of the artist comes not only from the immediate pleasure of the work but also with its evolution through time. There are growing trends in the tattoo world that provide a great deal of immediate gratification, but are prone to ware rather badly. Rothert explains how his work is created with a great deal of care as to the aging process of skin, both in terms of depth and care. Be it for reason of commemoration, memory or pure art, Rothert and the the other artists of Off The Map are well worth your time, money and eyes.

Life's a Beach

Department stores may have summer items on clearance, but summer's not even close to over in our eyes. We have some die hard beach fans who wanted to show their love of the sea (and land) through their tattoos.

This star fish and wheel tattoo was a single shot tattoo that Max did last winter. Winter is the ideal time for beach lovers to get tattooed since you need to keep your healing tattoo away from the sun and you need to avoid submerging in water. As Max says "No sunning or funning."

This next tattoo was on our Cape Cod loving client Amanda. It even got mention in this article on CapeCodOnline.com  Apparently Amanda isn't the only one showing her MA pride. Max worked around her existing compass and created a really incredible weathered map.

Nothing like a permanent reminder of warm thoughts, especially for those of us who have to take on New England winters!

Missing Max

It's been about three weeks since Max left Off the Map Easthampton for his stint at our Italian location, but it feel like much longer. Max is a staple to OTM New England, and we always miss him while he's away. Recently a client was thrilled to book a consult with Max for an upcoming project as posted this online-

"Very excited to have my consultation scheduled with the extremely talented Maximilian A.E. Rothert! Although he is booked through to Kingdom come...he is very much worth the wait!"

It's clear his US clients have been missing him, but we also happened to catch a lovely review from a gal he tattooed in Italy-

"Cervignano del Friuli, on the way home.New tattoo happiness,, and it shows. Second sitting on the sleeve,5 hours of bliss! Waiting for Max to post up pics to share. thanks Max and thanks Off The Map Tattoo Italy. Simply stellar experience! See you guys in October"

We also can't wait to see what Max did on the client who was raving about the experience! While in some ways it's sad to have our artists leave for extended periods of time, it's also amazing to have multiple locations to send our artists to so they can experience new environments, and have a chance to meet a new group of clients to work with!

Max is back to the studio this coming Saturday! We absolutely can't wait to give him a warm welcome home and hear all about his Italian adventures! We'll be sure to post all about the tattoos he did as well as upcoming travel

Skulls Part Deux

As we mentioned in a previous news item, skulls have been a continuously popular subject matter. So much so, we couldn't fit them all in one news item (two still just scratches the surface)!

This day of the dead inspired skull was done in a single session on this clients foot. Day of the dead imagery is general done in a more illustrative fashion, so it was fun for Max to combine some realism with filagree florishes.

This morphing skull contains multiple skulls overlapping in multiple ways. This effect has been popularized more recently by artists like Jeff Gogue and Jason Butcher. This tattoo is actually also a coverup, which is especially challenging when done exclusively in black and gray.

Last but not least, a wolf skull! Max played with focus in this tattoo keeping the teeth as the focal point and highly detailed, while the back remains less focused and diffused.

WIth so many variations and techniques that can be incorporated, skulls are an incredible and endless subject to be tattooed. That being said, make sure you keep checking for updates because it's more likely than not that more skulls are on the way! Cheers!

Italian Inspiration

During Max's trip to Italy, inspiration is in no short supply. The architecture, though and detail put into the buildings and landmarks is stunning. This light post at the Vatican is a perfect example of so much. The beautiful ornamental iron filagree is perfect inspiration for the tattoos Max loves to do in that style.

The doors in Italy put the US to shame. Every entry way is a statement, a beautiful showcase of whats to come. The door are all custom, unique and intricately designs. The combination of wood and metal is quite popular and Max would love to play with that combination of textures and materials in future tattoo projects.

The attention to detail in Italian architecture is really unmatched. The history is so rich and the pride shows through in so many historical landmarks, as well at kept homes throughtout.

This Pilar is in the Vatican and made us think of the bee tattoo below that Max did a few months back on a walk in tattoo. We did some research out of curiosity and found out the symbol of bees actually have quite a bit of history in Italy.

Max will be returning to Italy for two months from mid October to mid December and would love to do more tattoos inspired by Italy's rich history. If you would like to explore getting tattooed by Max on his next Italian adventure, fill out an online consult form with your idea! Ciao!

07.22.14

Filagree and Flourishes

Max's love for filagree is no secret and we loved how he incorporated it into his contribution to Pint Sized Painting Volume 2. Which by the way, will be on display at Off the Map Tattoo October 25! We are thrilled Max's piece was chosen to be in the art show and the book in progress! He further embellished these ornamental pieces by using gold leaving on the edges for an unexpected accent to the tiny pieces. By the way, these pieces are 2x3 inches!!

This piece was fun sketch Max worked on to practice layering and dimension! It's hard to believe these guys have time for anything other than tattooing and drawing for their clients, but when they have extra time... they just create more art for fun!

This filagree chest piece was done at Hell City Tattoo Fest and was a walk up client! She gave Max a lot of freedom with the design and he was able to have a lot of fun with the asymmetry of this symmetrical chest piece tattoo!

Max is quite booked in our Easthampton studio so catching him on the road (or overseas in Italy!) is the best way to grab a sooner spot.

07.19.14

It's Not all Black and White

While Max's passion is geared more towards black and gray tattooing, sometimes the right client, and the right idea comes by, and apparently, Max is awesome at color tattoos as well! This zombie mermaid 3/4 sleeve is on one of our very favorite clients Mariha. She was a dedicated client and was able to complete this project in a little over 6 months over the course of 6 sessions. When starting a large scale project like a sleeve, it's always important to plan ahead for budget and time! It is always to the benefit of the client, tattooer, and end result of the tattoo when the client is able to come regularly. Even in short periods of time, artists styles can change, so the longer a project takes to complete, the harder it can be to keep one cohesive vision.

This tattoo was actually intended to be a half sleeve, but they were both so please with the progress they decided to add the clam and the lobster to extend it into a 3/4 sleeve.

This adorable teapot tattoo was done in a single session and took around 4 hours. You can also see a tattoo from our "Animal Tattoo for Endangered Species" event peaking out on the bottom!

This tattoo is one of three phoenix tattoos (and countless skull tattoos) Max brought to completion in the past year. This piece was actually worked around an existing clover tattoo that the client wished to cover up. Max used a limited color palette and creative use of  negative space to detract from the cover up.

The best part of all of these tattoos is all three of these clients really gave make artistic freedom to create his version of a color tattoo. Don't forget to check back for more tattoo and news updates and Max finishes more tattoos like these!

07.17.14

Arrived in Italy!

After a car, a plane and a train ride, Max has made it to our studio in Cervignano del Friuli Italy! Max's calendar is already quite full for his stay, but if you are in the area and have an idea you'd like to talk to Max about don't hesitate to stop by the studio and consult with him about your idea.

Click here, or on the photo to email your ideas. You can also call the studio directly at +39 366 3877171

Max will also be returning to Italy from mid October to mid December, so if you aren't able to catch him this time, you can set up a time for his more extended stay! Max is so excited about his upcoming stints in Italy, primarily to draw inspiration from the amazing architecture and design. Max is really looking forward to immersing himself in the culture and gaining a new perspective to put into his tattooing.

Make sure you check back for updates on projects Max works on in Italy, as well as sight seeing adventures! Ciao!

Max's Waitlist

If you' ve been following the blog, or Max's work in general, you have likely caught wind of the fact that Max's books are closed for 2014. We know it can be frustrating and confusing to wait, so we wanted to clarify a few things to make it easier!

Are Max's books really closed for 2014? Can't he squeeze me in somewhere?

Unfortunately, yes his books are really closed, and no he can't squeeze you in- he is actually fully booked through the end of the year. Two months of which he is spending at Off the Map Tattoo in Italy. We are not holding secret spots for ransom, he's just actually completely full for the year! That being said occasionally he does have cancellations. People with in progress pieces on the cancellation list get priority in these cases. Otherwise, we generally send our a push notification through the Off the Map app (make sure to download it) and/or post on our Facebook with the specifics of time available and what kind of tattoos he will consider taking.

How can I get on Max's waitlist?

It's a great problem to have when your demand surpasses your supply, but it can be disappointing to let down clients, so first and foremost,  please know we don't like saying no. Turning clients away is very disappointing for us too, but alas, Max (and tattooers in general) are just people, with a limited amount of man hours and at some point, they have to start passing on certain prohects. If you want to get tattooed by Max, the first step is patience and a willingness to wait a few months, if not a few years to complete a project. The second step is to email your inquiry to the shop with as much detail as possible. We promise we read every email and will do our very best to get back to each of them. At this point we are only compiling ideas that Max might be willing to take on for his 2015 bookings. We are still ironing out details, but Max will be doing a limited amount on consultations in the fall before he leaves for Italy.

What's the secret to getting my idea chosen?

As you can imagine, once an artist has more clients they he or she can take, they can to be more chosey with what ideas they take on, so the quickest way to get "bumped" to the front of the line is to allow the artist as much creative freedom as possible while working within their style. Max enjoys black and gray, particuarly ornamental and intricate designs with surreal and macabre undertones. Large scale is generally more appealing, but not in every case. Lastly, if your really dedicated- head on over to our shop in Cergivnano del Fruili, Italy, and get right to the front of the line!

It can be a long process, but in the end, you'll have an amazing piece of art that will last a lifetime.

Max is overwhelmed by the ongoing support and looks forward to continuing to take on new tattoo projects in both Massachusetts and Italy. For those of you willing to wait, we greatly appreciate your patience and dedication to superior tattooing!

Tattoos in Bloom

When it comes to subject matter, flowers are really a timeless choice for your next tattoo. While always popular, flowers really surpass any kind of "trend" with their universal beauty. Max is particularly fond of making flowers more ornametal with the addition of filagree like in this beautiful rose and filagree tattoo he did on a lovely client named Wendy. Stay tuned for even more updated photos on the expansion of this piece. We'll give you a hint, this was about half way through the process!

\

Using flowers, there is also the option of combining more other imagery, or things of the imagination. Max's style often borders on the line between fantasy and reality, and that sort of combination is encompassed in this abstract tattoo.

Does this image look familiar? Well it should! We've posted about it a few times. Max would love to do this tattoo, particularly in his upcoming visit to Off the Map Italy in Cervignano del Fruili. He is living this Tuesday and will be at the location of our Italian partner for two weeks!

If you want to skip the line to get in with Max- make a trip to Italy! Or if you are lucky enough to be a resident of Italy, shoot Max an email to take advantage of this talented artist on your side of the pond!  Or contact the Italy studio directly for bookings.

Off the Map Charity Raffle- Win a $300 Gift Certificate

One of the most wonderful parts of working at Off the Map is the companies involvement in the local community. Since we are always looking for ways to up our commitment to the community starting in this month we will be holding a monthly raffle for a $300 gift certificate. We will be selling raffle tickets for $1.00 each and clients, supporters, friends, can buy as many as you'd like. Heck, even if you don't want a gift certificate, we will have the donation bin rolling every month. Absolutely 100% of all money earned will go to the specified charity of the month.

For our first charity we will be supporting Safe Passage. If you're coming in to get tattooed by Max- make sure you ask about participating!

Max has always worked hard at all of our charity events, and this last year when we held our Animal Tattoos for Endangered Species, this adorable otter Max created was favorite piece of flash. He was even able to tattoo one himself!

Max was also the last man standing when we put on our Harry Potter tattoos for Children's literacy event. He started at 10am and finished his last tattoo shortly after midnight.

This is a great chance to help our local community and earn a chance to win $300 towards your next tattoo with Max. It's win, win!

Skulls on Skulls

Since Max is such a fan of macabre subject matter, it's no wonder skulls show up frequently in his work. Skulls are a fairly popularized subject matter, maybe because they look tough, maybe because they represent mortality and one of the only things that we will leave behind. They're intriguing and hold so many stories, most of which will always be a mystery to us.

In the form of tattoos, clients get to create their own story. Some of them may be more light hearted, like this more modern interpretation of the widley know "skull and crossbones." While this client may not be a pirate, he is certainly a White Sox fan.

This tattoo has become a crowd favorite. This chef client had the existing knife tattoo that Max added onto with the skull and compass rose.

\

When this particular client asked for a sexy grim reaper, Max combined the imagery of a provactive woman and a partial skull to create a beautiful but ominous atmosphere for the piece.

Of course we can't leave out animal skulls. This ornamental ram skull was created for this client who simply loves ram skulls.

Stay tuned for more skull tattoos in an upcoming news item!

Italy Bound

Max is gearing up for his second trip to our studio in Italy from July 18- August 6. Our studio in Cervignano del Fruili came from partnering with world renowned realism tattooer, Alex De Pase. The grand opening was in March of this year and Max went for his first guest spot shortly thereafter. He was quite taken by the Italian culture and beautiful references and it's not hard to see why.

The beautiful architerture and historical sculptures are perfect inspiration for the way in which Max tattoos. Max already has over half a dozen spots booked and looks forward to continuing to build his Italian clientele. While he is happy to do any subject matter while he is traveling, he particularly fond of ornamental and sculptural designs, abstract realism and pieces with a macabre theme. This is one ornamental filagree sketch Max would love to tattoo on a willing client.

Max is happy to take ideas inspired by this, and is very open to discussing a discounted rate for pieces that allow him creative freedom while he is developing his client base. To inquire about getting tattooed in Italy, you may email Max directly through his website, reach out to the studio in Italy or US directly via this link.

Three Year Anniversary

It was a happy accident last Friday- June 27, when a shop friend had stopped by the studio and casually asked Max how long he has been tattooing at the shop. We hopped onto Google Calendar and did some back tracking to discover that exact day was his three year anniversary! It's hard to believe it's been three years since Max joined us full time. Max was just barely out of his apprenticeship and tattooing in Connecticut when he formally applied and started working at the shop two days a week (while he was still working 5 days in Connecticut) to show his desire and dedication to being a part of the Off the Map team. At the time, this was one of Max's best tattoos (and still a favorite!). It's amazing to see how much his work has changed from when he was focusing more on illustrative color tattoos.

To let out a bit of an Off the Map secret, we actually made the decision to hire Max primarily because of his sketch book. While his technical skill wasn't as advanced as we would like, we saw a huge potential in him. Three years later, Max has surpassed our expectations. This black and gray crow tattoo was an exciting piece, because it was when we saw Max really developing his own unique style and flare.

He has since continued to hit it out of the park with his abstract, surreal black and gray tattoos. We have had a wonderful group of clients willing to let Max really take creative liberties with the pieces, like this abstract phoenix back tattoo.

Max's style has become quite popular causing his books to be currently closed until 2015, but we will release information in the coming weeks about how to submit to be on his wait list. We couldn't be more proud of Max and his accomplishments to date, and we can't wait to see the evolution of his tattooing! Congratulations Max!

Creation Station and Urban Legends

The busier Max has become with tattoos (news item on his wait list coming soon!), the more he is working on scheduling time to work on creating art in other mediums, outside of the studio. Being proactive about his desire to create more art, him and fellow full time tattoo artist, Frank Ready, just moved into their own private art studio

The new space was the perfect opportunity for Max to work on his painting for our most recent art show "Urban Legends." We were excited as Max revealed sneak peaks of his creation in the days leading up to the event.

.

It was hard to understand how he was going to incorporate all the ideas he had, including inspiration from the urban legend The Spider Bite, widely popularized by the Scary Stories books that terrified and scarred us all as children.

How would that story have happened in the world of selfies, mirror photos and self indulgence? Max was going to show us.

The attention to detail and dedication to each piece of the painting was tedious, but remarkable in the end. Max printed out each of the hash tags on transparency paper, and hand cut each letter out with an exacto knife. Admittedly we were taking bets at the shop about how many words Max would get through before he gave up, but he pushed through!

We think the end result is worth it, how about you? This painting is mixed medium oil and spray paint on canvas, 30"x40" and available for $600. Serious inquiries please call the shop at 413-527-6574.

Hi Everyone!!!

I'm really excited to announce that I'll be in Italy in less than 2 weeks. I'm very excited for my plan to visit Milan, and reconnect with Luca Natalini, before going onto our Off The Map location in Cervignano del Friuli. It's fun to think how in 14 days I'll be alongside a great artist and person, Alex DePase.

Here are a couple of tattoo ideas I've been working on that I'd like to do. If any one is interested in these ornamental Rococo style pieces or tattoos inspired by these, please contact me, I will be doing them at a fraction of my normal tattoo rate.

Hope to hear from you soon! You can contact me by clicking the banner below.

Ram skull chest tattoo progress

Hey Everyone!

Here's a piece I started the other day. The client wanted me to do a ram skll with an element of filigree. This is after our first sitting and after using the Cheyenne Spirit for the first time. We still have alot of background and florid rococo onamentation to put in around the skull and also need to finish the actual skull. The horns are close to finished. I am really happy with how this is looking so far and thought I'd share.

Also as a reminder: I'M CURRENTLY TAKING APPOINTMENT'S FOR MY GUEST SPOT FOR OUR NEW LOCATION AT OFF THE MAP-ITALY. Roses and Filigree

Hey Everyone!

Here's a piece that i've been working on. The eventual end point will be a completed 1/4 body tattoo of two of my favorite things to tattoo... filigree and roses. in this picture everything has had one pass, and will in the end have another to smoothe out the blocked in tones and play with the push and pull. I lok forward to doing more work like this during my time in Italy. If interested for either of my guest spots in April (15-25)  or in July (15- mid August) feel free to contact me at max@offthemaptattoo.com .

FOO DOG SLEEVE PUZZLE BALL TATTOO

Hi Everyone!

So the clock is ticking down on my upcoming guestspot at OTM-Italy, and I couldn't be more excited!

It's been a busy week, one filled with little sleep, photos of finished large projects, new additions to projects and  discoveries of equipment. As far as equipment is concered, I tried the Cheyenne "Spirit" and loved it. I've been using and loving the "Thunder" from the same company for almost a year now, and feel like having the "Thunder Spirit" is the perfect combination of tools. Here's the 2nd tattoo I did with this combo and was happy with how it came out. It's the newest addition to an ongoing foo dog sleeve. It's a puzzle ball under the lion's paw.

I'M CURRENTLY TAKING APPOINTMENT'S FOR MY GUEST SPOT FOR OUR NEW LOCATION AT OFF THE MAP-ITALY. I'LL BE THERE IN BOTH APRIL 15-25TH AND JULY 17TH-AUGUST 6TH.  IF YOU'RE INTERESTED PLEASE CONTACT ME EITHER AT THE STUDIO PHONE NUMBER (413)527-6574 OR THROUGH MY EMAIL MAX@OFFTHEMAPTATTOO.COM

Pint Sized Paintings

Hey everyone!

Hope everyone is having a great week and accomplishing their goals. This last week my accomplishment was the completion of my Pint Sized Paintings. It was a huge honor for Durb Morrison to have me be a part of the show, and was like Christmas when we recieved our little white canvases in the mail. I had alot of fun doing a warped german rococo style of filigree, also making it so that it works in 5 different combinations. I also enjoyed taking the time to add a touch of elegance by gold leafing the edges, it felt like I was making something truly special.

Thanks for looking!

I'm so excited to add these into the collection and have the clients show their earned artwork!

In the next few months ahead I plan on composing a number of pieces that I hope to tattoo in the near future. I'll be publishing them along the way in hope of them finding a new home. Also in these next few months I'll be gearing up for my multiple guest spots over seas.

I'M CURRENTLY TAKING APPOINTMENT'S FOR MY GUEST SPOT FOR OUR NEW LOCATION AT OFF THE MAP-ITALY. I'LL BE THERE IN BOTH APRIL 15-25TH AND JULY 17TH-AUGUST 6TH.

Freehand london street tattoo

Hey Everyone!

Here's a recent addition to a Sherlock Holmes inspired sleeve that I've been slowly chipping away at for over the past year and a half. In this session we added a freehanded street scene that will eventually have a newspaper boarder  with part of it magnafied revealing the "BAKER" street sign. For people not knowing the the significance of "BAKER ST." it was the street that Sherlock Holmes lived on.

Also as a friendly reminder... I'M CURRENTLY TAKING APPOINTMENT'S FOR MY GUEST SPOT FOR OUR NEW LOCATION AT OFF THE MAP-ITALY. I'LL BE THERE IN BOTH APRIL 15-25TH AND JULY 17TH-AUGUST 6TH.IF YOU'RE INTERESTED PLEASE CONTACT ME EITHER AT THE STUDIO PHONE NUMBER (413)527-6574 OR THROUGH MY EMAIL MAX@OFFTHEMAPTATTOO.COM

Paradise

Hi Everyone!

So today was the first day of the Paradise Tattoo Gathering in Keystone, CO. This morning I attended Jeff Gogue's seminar. I've taken more than a handful of his seminars, both at Paradises and World Wide Tattoo Conferences past and each time it's something new, something to be learned and they always leave me inspired and hungry to make positive changes in both my work and life. I'm really looking forward to taking some of what I learned and applying it to tomorrow's full day appointment.

Here's an in progress shot of an owl and cherry blossom branch half sleeve tattoo I did shortly before leaving. This is the result of about 4.5 hrs. We still have another 4.5-5 hours to go. Looking forward to finishing this up!

Grants Pass

Hi everyone!

Long time no post. I've been wholey enjoying my time on the west coast. My adventure started with my landing in Portland,OR. From there I bounced back and forth between Salem and Portland for a few days, ate at so many food trucks, visited family and spent time at Silver falls. After I traveled down to Eugene, where I spent a night with a dear friend,Alida, who planted the seed of tattooing which has since grown. I shall be forever in her debt. From Eugene, I took my dear sweet time driving down to Grants Pass. Instead of taking the direct route, I took the coastal highway further south to the redwood forests and to the rivers that run through them. I arrived at OTM-NW on the 17th until today, my last day here for this guest spot. From here I fly to Hell City Pheonix this weekend. I've met so many great people on this adventure and wish the best to them.

This trip has been so humbling and leveling. The time spent alone has really helped to bring me back to myself. I'd forgotten the importance of having my own experiences and moments of solitary retreat. It's selfish, but we all are in our own ways.

08.12.13

Sexy Female Grim Reaper Sleeve tattoo

Hey Everyone!

It's be an exciting week here at OTM-NE, yesterday Russ Abbott put on a phenominal seminar/ webinar on the Tattooist Palette and tomorrow the absolutely delightful Shawn Hebrank will be starting his guest spot. It's weeks like these that remind me how humblingly fortunate I am work at Off The Map and with the TattooNow.

I apologize for not posting a photo earlier. I'm just really excited to announce my doing a guest spot in Mach of 2014 with Alex DePase at his studio in Grado, Italy. And for your viewing pleasure here's the start of a sexy grim reaper armadillo arm sleeve. Thanks for looking!

BIO MECH ARM TATTOO

Hi everyone,

sorry for the long gap in news items... my hard drive crashed a little over a week ago, and it's been an emotionally exhausting task trying to get everything back in working order. It was a huge reality check thinking that i'd lost hundreds of hours of work to the blinking folder with a question mark in the middle. In honor or the mechanical and technical difficulties, here's a black and grey bio mechanical arm tattoo that's currently in progress

07.18.13

Mandala

Hey everyone!

here's a filligree mandala tattoo I did the other day in the center of my client michael's chest. I really enjoyed doing this tattoo for him, but what I enjoyed the most was the dialogue the two of us shared and the information that he shared with me. I look forward to tattooing him again in the future. I also hope to incorporate more of these designs into my filigree work.  I had fun with both stipple/ dotwork and smoothe black and grey shading to create a contrast in shade texture. thanks for looking!

07.11.13

cross tattoo coverup with skulls half sleeve tattoo

Hey Everyone!

Here's a coverup tattoo i did a few days ago. It's a coverup tattoo of a poorly done cross. I used a overlay/ mashup of of 3 skulls  spanning the exterior section of his half sleeve. I enjoyed utilizing  a few new techniques i've been wanting to try for a while. The result was a successful coverup, which becomes increasingly more difficult when doing it in black and grey. Can't wait to get healed pictures. Thanks for looking. Be sure to check out my porfolio section!

06.30.13

abstract dogwood blossom tattoo

Hey Everyone!

Here's a tattoo that's a little different for me. The client has an existing rib  tattoo which he was very unhappy with, it consisted of  script and randomnly placed small dogwood blossoms.  Upon his request we're keeping the original tattoos but adding geometric forms, ink/watercolor splotches, and dogwood flowers. This is the result of the first sitting, it's still a bit loose but I was a fan of the dogwood blossom.

06.29.13

Cape cod nautical sleeve progress

Hey everyone!

Here's a little progress i did the other day on a great client Amanda. She came to me with the idea of turning her arm into an antique map of cape cod, with other elements of old tyme nautical elements  from the cape/mass. In this sitting I did the texture of peeling and cracking around the boarder the give the piece a revealing  effect. I did not do the compass rose but it fits into the entire piece really well.

thanks for looking!

06.23.13

All seeing eye tattoo

Hi Everyone!

Here's a close up of a sleeve that I finished recently. It's on a great client and was very honored to do my first completed sleeve tattoo on him. This closeup is of and all seeing eye tattoo/ third eye tattoo/ illuminati tattoo... take your pick. For it I used a walrus's eye as inspiration. I chose a walrus because of it's association with death. It's apropriate for the tattoo because of the Macabre/ Momento Mori theme for the entire piece. Thanks for looking and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for my protfolio for the sleeve's final upload!

06.21.13

Graduation day

HI EVERYONE!

GREAT NEWS TODAY IN MY PERSONAL LIFE!  MY LITTLE SISTER, MELINA, GRADUATES HIGHSCHOOL THIS AFTERNOON!  It's exciting to think about how much she's grown, her plans for the future, and how just the other day I was changing her diapers. I can't begin to explain how proud and humbled I am to see her walk and recieve her diploma.

here are a couple of full chest concepts. I took some filigree concepts for full torso. they're a little different from one another the first is a symmetrical piece and the second the top has an added little piece. I'd be more than happy to alter a little or add the head of something into the center piece... like a lion, deer, ram/ ram skull, venitian mask or rottweil mask etc... It'd be a really fun project and something I'd be really into!

05.31.13

WOLF SKULL

HI EVERYONE!

I'm sad to see my dear friend and fellow artist Ivana leave. It was an incredible week and a half with her. Ivana since the first time we've met has always been an inspiration, not only as an artist but as a person.

I did this macro wolf skull an autum leaves half sleeves tattoo on one of her last days in the studio. I had alot of fun with this tattoo. I enjoy doing skulls especially animal skulls. I'd love to do more animal skulls in this way playing with focal lengths and textures. It's still a work in progress, we'll be adding color into the leaves and a worms eye view of a maple tree in the distant background.

female back piece work in progress

Hey everyone!

Here's a work in progress back piece that I've been chipping away at. This is about 12 hours of tattooing in, with many more to go. I'm really happy with the results so far. This tattoo is fitting for my personal life at the moment... For my client it has alot of signifigance and I'm very fortunate to share in all of my clients lives as the make this journey of transformation. The tattoos that adorn the skin of my clients are a representation of both their and my experiences and our present moment in life.

Graveyard backpiece tattoo filigree rib back tattoo

Hey Everyone!

This weekend kicks off a great lineup of phenominal guest artists. My friend and monthly housemate Andre Checko is here, along with the cool headed and talented Frank Ready. Next week however is something special...IVANA IS IN THE HOUSSSEEEE!!! I along with the rest of Off the Map are puppy piddling with anxious excitement!

Here's the latest installment in the graveyard backpiece. In this session I focussed on the left filigree framework... and let me just remind everyone again.... I FLIPPIN LOVE FILIGREE... thanks for looking!

Thankful

Hey Everyone!

I'd like to take a moment to say how truely thankful I am to be tattooing. Tattooing has been the one true constant in my life for the past 5 years from the commencement of my apprenticeship to now. It has given me so much and made me sacrafice a lot as well. I honestly cannot imagine myself doing anything else, the investment that is tattooing  has returned more that I could have ever hoped for. I'm thankful to aslo be now working at a studio that genuinely cares about me as a person and the work that is produced. It's been almost 2 years now that I've been at Off The Map, and I couldn't be happier. When I first started I compared it to being thrown into the deep end of the pool with just barely knowing how to tread water. It wasn't the case it was in reality that OTM and tattooing that has kept me afloat, and taught me to swim.... It's humbling to say the very least. Thank you.

Here's a picture from this year's "Best of the Valley" from the Advocate. It's a huge honor to be part of all this.

Lace hand tattoo

HEY EVERYONE!

So today is an exciting day.... I get to finish a sleeve that was started a little over a year ago. It's on the awesome client Mr. Tarby. He and I have spent alot of time together and for a great bond in the process of this tattoo. I'll be sad to see him move away out of the North East. Today is our final polish pass on his "Momento Mori Sleeve Tattoo". I'll be posting healed pictures in about a month or so. Maybe even a Amped 3D version.

Here's an addition to a filigree bracer I did a while ago. The client wanted to give it the appearance of having a lace lining. In this session she took the step of bringing her forearm half sleeve down onto her hand. This is after the first pass. Here I just layed it all down and in the next session I'll be going through and tightening it up. Thanks for looking!

05.01.13

abstract skull woman face

HEY EVERYONE!

So the past few days I've been finishing up alot of my multisession large scale pieces. It's a little bit of a double edged sword. On one hand I'm excited to have the work completed and become to additions to the portfolio. On the other, it's sad to not see the clients on a regular basis who i've formed great relationships with as be took the journey of creating the tattoo. I do really look forward to seeing them again and hope to continue more endeavors with them.

Here's something I started the other day, that really emcompasses the things that I love doing, and doing alot of. It's a mash up of photorealism and abstractions that for better or worse fall into the macabre genre. This is after the first pass and probably will need another 1-2 sittings.  i had alot of fun doing this tattoo and am really loking forward to getting back into it for another session and finishing it up. Thanks for looking!

Color phoenix and skull tattoo

HEY EVERYONE!

Apologies for not updating sooner. Just got back this evening from a much needed break in Canada. Here's a tattoo I was able to get a sitting in before leaving. It's an incorporation/ coverup of an old clover tattoo. The client wanted a mix of a skull, phoenix and floral irish heritage elements. Here's where we are after our second sitting. Thanks for looking!

04.22.13

Graveyard angel backpiece tattoo

HEY EVERYONE!

This past weekend was a very quiet weekend at the studio. Hell City Killumbus was this past weekend and everyone except the very wonderful Racheal and I were in attendance.  I been keeping up to date on Instagram and Facebook. Durb is and incredible event promoter and organizer and I look forward to be at this year's Hell City Phoenix, AZ in August. Hopefully I'll have this piece done by then. Normally I'm not into doing names with the dates of life and death, simply because it reminds me of a headstone. I always feel that there can be something more personla and original that reminds you of the departed's life rather than their death. HOWEVER...There are exceptions...This client approached me with the idea of doing an actual graveyard on a massive scale, wanting to fill his entire back. Here's our progress after two very long and very productive sittings. This is after about 13 hours in. We still have about 3-4 times that before this piece is finished. Thank you for looking! The top and sides are fresh while the angel on the bottom is healed after the first pass. Please note that the script at the top was not done by me.

Biker Harley Davidson pinup girl in progress

HEY EVERYONE!

My deepest and sincerest condolences to the citizens of Boston and West. I strongly urge anyone remotely near the area to give the truest donation you can, wether it be money, skilled labor, blood etc... It's moments and events like these that hopefully we see ourselves banding together and honestly helping one another.

Here's a sneak peak of a half sleeve I've been working on. The client approached me wanting to do a pinup girl on the back of his Harley Davidson motorcycle. I had a fun time adding doing this and definitely geeked out playing with negative space, abstract paint splurts behind her head and the secondary roses encompassing it all. This is a picture after the first pass on the top and the bottom half is healed after the first pass. Looking forward to go over this again and finish the Harley Davidson motorcycle pinup girl tattoo.

Old creepy eye tattoo in progress

HEY EVERYONE!

Hope y'alls weekend went well. Here's a piece that I started on Sunday. The client had me place a rose tattoo on his elbow with filligree flourishing that led into and eye on the forarm. The eye was the furthest along of the entire piece. This is the first time doing a larger photorealistic eye and I had an absolute blast with this! It's killing me to have to wait to get back into it and start adding the detail, textures, high/low lights. This part has about 3 hours into it and should need about another 2 to really bring it to life.

04.11.13

Humpback whale mother and baby sea turtle tattoo

HEY EVERYONE!

Here's a 3/4 sleeve in progress that i started a little while back. the client came to me wanting a polynesian inspired tattoo with humpback whales and sea turtles. We started the tattoo by drawing on the polynesian/ french curve  like flow and then stenciling in the whales and turtles. This last sitting that, the one pictured was after filling in the background. We plan on continuing the piece further to a 3/4 sleeve with the addition of sea horses, negative space sea flora and background flow. Really looking forward to getting back into this whale of a tattoo! Oh puns!

03.30.13

line man electricity sleeve W.I.P.

HEY EVERYONE!

Here's the newest addition to Jon's lineman sleeve. It's kind of the story of electricity but with a chaotic twist. The shoulder cap is of a nuclear meltdown, giant bolts of electricity shooting down the transmission llnes, substations blowing up, and skeletal lineman working the wires... all sorts of fun madness. This is piece isn't finished but really liked the start and wanted to share. Thank you for looking!

03.28.13

Inker

Hey everyone!

The other day after getting my first ever laser session, my client Connor and I took a visit to Guidline Tattoo in East Hartford, Ct. I'd been planning on going to meet Inker in person for about a year now... Going into the studio was like being transported in time. Flash from Jack Rudy and Original Inker flash from '83 lined the walls. everywhere you cast your eyes there was something to look at! We were greeted by an older tattoo artist with long peppered hair  covered in original Don Ed Hardy work, named Kevin. Truly beside myself... It's incredibly humbling to meet and talk to someone who's been dedicated to the craft and art of tattooing longer that you've been alive. I want to thank him again for giving me a critique, it was a huge honor. When I did meet Inker it was exactly like I'd anticipated, a humbling blurry whirlwind. We eventually left with a appointment reciept in hand and a few pictures in the other. My favorite of them was of this sign that hung over the enterance to the tattoo areas. It is just perfect. Can't wait for my appt June 7th!

03.27.13

magnolia watercolor

Hey everyone!

So the other day I experienced laser removal for the first time, one of my clients and I took a trip to see Jack Morton of Rethink Your Ink. He does a circuit of visitations to various tattoo studios throughout the country on an eight week rotation. I know in the past that for certain coverups I've recommended getting a few treatments of laser to clients... and I want to say... It's really not as bad as I'd anticipated. It did hurt a little more than getting a tattoo, but it lasted all of maybe 10 minutes and it was done. I'll be posting pictures of the before, during and after. This way people can see how much it really does help with the process of covering unwanted tattoos.

Today's posting is of another practice watercolor I did a few days ago. It's pretty straight forward... just a quick magnolia branch. Done on 140 Arches cold press paper. If interested in prints or originals feel free to contact yours truely. Thanks for looking!

03.23.13

Rottweil mask and lotus watercolor

Hey Everyone!

In spirit of the Paradise Artists retreat, here's a painting I did a couple nights back. It's watercolor on arches 140lb cold press. I'm trying to make time now to get back into watercolors. My goal is  to do a few of these quick practice paintings a week and work my way up from there. All of these would be up for sale either in prints or the originals. Feel free to contact me via email or through the studio. Thanks for looking!

03.18.13

dot work mandala rework

HI EVERYONE!

Not too much news to report other than we here at the shop have the incredible artist, Dennis Wehler! It's his second time here in Easthampton, and boy did his trip over from Denmark sound like a wild one! I'm really looking forward to seeing what sort of awesome tattoos he has lined up!

Here's a rework of a mandala I did a while back. The client came to me with bad and lopsided linework... not a good thing when you're doing a repeating symmetrical tattoo.

03.07.13

Kracken skull and octopus tentacle macabre sleeve work in progress

HEY EVERYONE!

Here's a piece I started a few months back. This picture is after our second full day sitting. The first session I'd drawn on the imagery and blocked in the major elements of the upper half, and in this one we rendered the tentacles and skull. It was in this sitting that the client brought to my attention that he'd like me to continue his half sleeve down and complete the sleeve. I really enjoyed playing around with the different elements to make something that reads well, and hasn't roadblocked the ability to continue down the arm... actually some of my favorite parts of this tattoo are the portions of negative space. thanks for looking!

03.05.13

FREEHAND LUNAR MOTH

HEY EVERYONE!

Here's the newest addition to my client Nicole's backpiece. In this sitting we added a Lunar moth to the anatomical head. The reason for the moth was a not for any specific reason other than it fits the motif and mood of the piece, but also because the top of the wings matched the clavicals perfectly! Can't wait to get back into it. This is an in progress picture after we took our first break. Thanks for looking!

03.03.13

Great week of great people

HEY EVERYONE!

This week at Off the Map was just awesome. period. Here are a couple photos of the great times that were had. Tomorrow I'll upload tattoos, but tonight is just time to reminisce.

03.02.13

Humpback whale and sea turtle wildlife tattoo

HEY EVERYONE!

This week has been an incredibly exciting and informative week. In house we have the guest artists Stefano Alcatara, Ernesto Nave and Matt Stebly. It's one of those weeks that is a real reminder of how fortunate I am to be in the position I am. It's incredibly humbling to be contiously surrounded by some of the best in the industry, and to form bonds and friendships with people who years ago I thought were untouchable. Coming to Off the Map was like taking my first breathe. It's unfaultering helped to shape and nurture my growth as an artist.

Here's a half sleeve I started the other day. The client wanted to embody her love of Humpback whales and Hawaii. This is after our first sitting. The background will be inspired by polynesian designs and traditional elements but done in subtle transitional greytones so as to not distract from the featured whales and seaturtle. Looking forward to getting back into this one!

Thanks for looking!

PRAYING HANDS AND CROSS BACK TATTOO

HEY EVERYONE!

Nothing new to report other than last night's TattooNow TV's Paradise heavy hitter special was incredible. It's a chance to hear the some of the most influencial and visionary artists in both painting and tattooing. Some of the special guests included Big Gus, Alex and Allyson Grey, Damon Conklin, James Kern, Guy Aitchison, Steve Peace, Chet Zar and more! Hearing them talk about what it meant to be a visionary artist was nothing short of inspiring. You can see what you missed or simply watch it again HERE.

Here's a teaser picture of a project I was able to get into the other night. I started this tattoo about a year and a half ago before starting here at Off the Map.

Praying hands tattoo, Cross tattoo, wooden cross tattoo, roses tattoo, cross and roses tattoo, praying hands and cross tattoo, christian tattoo, religious tattoo.

02.23.13

Ornate skeleton key with Chakra tattoo

Hey Everyone!

Here's an ornate skeleton key tattoo I did the other day. The client requested to put the colors of the different chakra points as little gemstones on the stem of the key. I really enjoyed doing the filligree ornamentation on the top. One of her perameters was for it to have a sense of being a heart, so I went with something that was a bit asymetrical. I hope to do more filligree and sculpted scrollwork in the future. My reference folders are growing and hoping to put them to good use soon! Thanks for looking!!! Namaste!

02.20.13

Kraken octopus Skull

Hey Everyone!

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in voting for me in the Best of the Valley- Tattoo Artist catergory. Your continued support of my work really inspires me to continue to push myself further than I thought I'd be. Thank you!

Here's something I started the other day. It's a 3/4 black and grey sleeve tattoo. It's of a human skull with kracken octopus tentacles coming out of and emerging from the bottom. The top of the skull I transformed into the top of an anatomical heart... the top is difficut to see from the angle of the picture. This is after the first sitting where we blocked in the major shapes and forms. Looking forward to getting back into it! Thanks for looking!

02.05.13

Filigree books

HEY EVERYONE!

So the other week a client I hadn't seen in over a year came in to have another  sitting on her thigh tattoo. I posted the original drawn on and lined versions around the same time! It was really great to see her after all this time and still know that she was doing really well! Here's the result! We're doing a couple of old books with filigree running throughout. I don't know how many times I've said this but, I FREAKING LOVE FILIGREE!

Also please remember to vote for me for best of the valley, tattoo artist catergory. Your vote and support is very appreciated.

MS TATTOO

HEY EVERYONE!

The other evening I did a tattoo for a client who's reason for getting the tattoo really struck a chord. It goes as follows... She'd been diagnosed with MS years back, it then went into remission and reciently resurfaced. Around the same time the disease resurfaced her cousin was diagnosed with MS as well. The tattoo was a reminder to her that she had to really value everyday she has. The tattoo located on her ankle/ side of the calf, is a blown dandilion with script that reads as follows "Live each moment".  Thank you for looking.

Last piece Momento Mori sleeve

Hey Everyone!

So the other day was a great day for a client/ friend and I; it was the last addition to the Momento Mori sleeve I've been working on for about a year.  In this sitting we added the owl holding a pocket watch chain to the interior of the upper arm. This is the first pass on the owl. I took a more illustrated approach to the rendering of this versus doing a straight photorealist rendering. We only have a couple sittings to fill the smaill gaps and a long polish pass.  I'm really excited to reveal the work in it's entirety. Thanks for looking!

HEY EVERYONE!

Hope everyone's first week of the new year is going the way we'd hoped and keeping up with the positive changes we want to see in ourselves! On this end, on of the positives came the other day as a wonderful surprise when I opened my Instagram account... 1000 FOLLOWERS!!! It's a huge honor to have that many individuals like the work that I do and post on instagram. I hope that as I grow as an artist the number of eyes that my work reaches continues to grow. If you have Instagram and wish to follow me my profile is: @maximilianrothert. Again, Thank you everyone from the bottom of my heart.

Graveyard backpiece #1

Hey Everyone!

This post is kind of a continuation of yesterday's post. Here's the second tattoo, which happens to be the first installment of a full backpiece. The client, Garrett, sat like an champion! This tattoo is the result of 7 hours of tattoo time. I'm really surprised and what we were able to accomplish in that short span of time.

So about the tattoo... First, let me say I "enjoy" doing memorial tattoos for people in our lives that have passed. I use "enjoy" losely because it sucks to have to get one for that very reason. The client approached me with a very literal memorial piece, he wanted a graveyard... not just any graveyard, but he wanted it to fill his entire back! This sitting we started at the bottom in this sitting blocking in the large angel that we're using to frame out the bottom of the scene. This picture doesn't really give it justice but the tattpp spans his entire lower third of the back. Thanks for looking!

FIRST OF THE YEAR

HEY EVERYONE!

Happy New Year everyone! Starting fresh this year, so far I've had 2 great tattoos back to back. This one was completed on 1/1/13... New Year's Day! It was a great tattoo to kick off the year. This was the first sitting on an natural selection mask shoulder tattoo. This was seriously alot of fun to do and such a great concept. Our next appt we'll be putting in color. The client approached me wanting an owl butterfly mask coming off a womans face and lilly of the valley flowers. Thanks for looking!

12.28.12

No Evil

HEY EVERYONE!

How goes it!? Hope everyone had a wonderful holidays! Up here in the NE we finally were able to get some snow for the holidays. Haven't yet figured out what my new year's resolution will be. I normally like to take the couple of day's before the 1st of the year to take a moment for serious and objective introspection. I like to look at the past year for personal shortcomings that I can change them and love the things that have had a positive for both me and the ones I care about.

This tattoo I did the other day kind of represents  what we need to do as people as we bring in the new era. I enjoyed doing this tattoo. I went with a little more of a painterly style on these no evil monkeys. Here's a black and grey hear no evil, speak no evil, see no evil monkeys.... no evil monkeys. THANKS FOR LOOKING!

12.24.12

Nicole's backpiece

HEY EVERYONE!

Happy Holidays Everyone! It's a great time of year to truly enjoy the company you surround yourself with, I like many others will be doing exactly that. For those of us without it's good to be thankful for all the little things. It's also time to bring forth the change that comes with the start of a new era. Hope everyone has a warm and safe holiday(s).

Here's another addition to Nicole's ongoing backpiece. Last sitting we added black and grey pear blossoms to her shoulder. I focused on using the focal length effect that one finds in alot of macro photography. Looking forward to our next sitting! Thanks for looking!

12.23.12

Phoenix backpiece numero deux

HEY EVERYONE!

So the other day I started another full back phoenix tattoo. The client approached me wanting to do a full color asmmetrical pheonix across her back. She wanted a raptor based head and torso with asian inspired peacock like tail feathers. At the moment she still wants to keep the lower back tribal tattoo.

I stenciled the head and had drawn the rest on using tombo markers and a tattoo pen. Really looking forward to getting into this piece again. Next sitting we'll block in our darks and background.

12.22.12

HAPPY DAYS!

HEY EVERYONE!

So the incredible, astonishing, delightful and workaholic  Kelly Doty is visiting and doing her guest spot at the OTM-NE studio for the next week. She truely lights up the studio with her presence and we've missed her so much! On top of this great news and event, THIS YEAR'S HOLIDAY/ 7th ANNIVERSARY PARTY WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!!!! I'd like to thank everyone that came out and it was great to see and talk to client's outside of them sitting in the chair.

Here's a new addition to the sisyphus sleeve that I've been working on. This is the first sitting on the part of the myth that King Sisyphus tricks death, leaving thanatos chained and returns to the land of the living to haunt his widowed wife. This is after the first pass and really looking forward to getting back into it and finishing it up!

12.13.12

SNEAK PEEK PHEONIXH

HEY EVERYONE!

Here's a sneak peek of a work in progress of a mythical fire bird full back piece. I've been having alot of fun with it and using alot of abstracted painterly strokes and movement to create a firey chaotic effect. Thanks for looking and hope to see everyone at this year's holiday party!

EVOLVE

HEY EVERYONE!

Today was a good tattoo day. Unfortunately I won't be posting it today because it's the start of a project that I've been looking forward to getting into for months, and i don't want to spoil the reveal.  I can give you a hint: a sleeve based on a group of works by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

I've been using photoshop more extensively now and have really enjoyed the results. I've used it to do things like overlay effects, creating atsmosphere i.e. fog etc., and most recently I've been playing with the 3d preloads from the jaw-droppingly masterful BEZ 666. The Design Through Chaos DVD is incredible. It's shown me a new tool that with help both myself and more  importantly help my clients visualize what designs would look like at different scales in 3D space on a variety of body parts. It's a really incredible tool.

Here's a progress picture/ update on he evolution leg sleeve that i've been working on. It's a cotton gin and run down factory.

STAINED GLASS

HEY EVERYONE!!!!

Here's a stained glass chest panel tattoo teaser of a St. Micheal tattoo. The client approached me originally wanting a St. Micheal piece to cover his right pectoral and told me to have fun with it. SO I DID! I did a little homework and fell in love with the Art Nouveau movement in stained glass. The use of busy texture and color transitions in sections of glass in contrast with the clean tones in the rendering of skin enthralls me. I'd love to build a body of work with the elements found in these, whether is be reproduction of the many images I have, your own stained glass images, or an idea you'd like to put this twist on.

Hope you enjoy the sneak peak! ANDDDD HOPE TO SEE EVERYONE AT THIS YEAR'S 7th ANNIVERSARY/ HOLIDAY PARTY FOR OFF THE MAP!!!!! For more info visit www.offthemaptattoo.com or call the studio @ (413)527-6574.

Cheers!

Wings and boots!

HEY EVERYONE!

The other day I realize that tattooing takes a serious toll on your body. I'd always heard from and been around artists that suffered the daily aches and pains, but have always detached myself from the reality of the situations. The first step towards working on my physical self is to restart going regularly to crossfit. During a conversation, Joe King from the studio also informed me about the factors that cause painful carple tunnel. I'd been through the early stages before and it honestly sucks. There's a harsh reality about this career, if one doesn't take care and react to the warning signs, will render us: blind, deaf, with our hands and backs broken. So it's about that time, think ahead and start now.

Thanks for reading and looking!

Here's a pair of boots with wings that I did on a female client's forearm. I apologize for the slight wierdness in color... tried to correct what the iphone took. Hopefully get a chance to take healed pictures when her partner comes in to finish his!

THANKFUL!

Hey Everyone!

I truely hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. It gave me time to reflect on how many positives and how fortunate i've been throughout this past year. Thank you to everyone who's been a part of it.

I'm truely thankful to have some of the best client's in the world! They've trusted me to transform their abstract ideas into something tangable and visual. They've allowed me to be an artist for them and it is really a great feeling!

Here's an example of taking the abstract and giving it my visual interperitation. It's the abstract theme of light vs. dark from the biblical verse of John 1:5.

#FOODTATTOOSFORHUNGER

Hey Everyone!

SO FOOD TATTOOS FOR HUNGER WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!!!! OTM-NE RAISED OVER 2100$! We had 5 artists working all day and did a total of 40 tattoos! Special thank you to Daniel and Megan-Jean  from Painted Soul Tattoo in CT, for volunteering their time at the studio and supporting the great cause! If you're interested in seeing some of the finished products, check out #foodtattoosforhunger on instagram and twitter!

Here's a selection from the 8/9 tattoos I did today. These two are my favorites of the day. Both were really great clients! The chantrell mushroom tattoo was done on Sara who also happens to own the porchetta pig and sage tattoo i did a month or so back. The sockeye salmon  fish head hand tattoo was on a really nice tattoo arist Keri from NY, who drove all the way to Easthampton, MA to help us out! Thanks for looking!

Sleep Paralysis hag

Hi everyone!

Here's a sleep paralysis hag tattoo that I started a few weeks back. This is after the first sitting and I just saw it healing the other day and it looks great! I want to thank my amazing girlfriend for being my model for this tattoo. This tattoo is the start of a lower half sleeve depicting sleep paralysis. Next sitting we'll be adding a sleep hag and shattered clock. Looking forward to get back into this one. I surrounded the beautiful woman with crocus because of their ability to induce a coma. I also included a few negative space cobwebs to add to the stillness of the piece.

Thanks for looking!

Realistic heart shoulder tattoo

Hey everyone!

It's been a while since my last update, so here's the start of the bombardment of news items. Lifes been interesting this past month, filled with highs and lows. One of the things that's been able to forget about the rougher moments is the act of tattooing. I've had the honor to have the opportunity to start some really fun projects.

Here's one of these fun projects:

It's based on the lyrics "don't you wish the orange stayed forever". This is the first installment of this half sleeve tattoo. it's a realistic heart tattoo, black and grey tattoo, fancy script tattoo, fall leaf tattoo. Thanks for looking!

SKIN AND INK ARTICLE

HEY EVERYONE!

So a few months ago the wonderful Mary from Skin and Ink came to the Off The Map-NE studio to do a spread in an upcoming issue. Well, it's finally out! It's very humbling and incredibly exciting to have such great things written and have my work showcased in such a well known and widely publicized magazine. The entire article showcases all resident artists including Jeff Gogue from the NW studio, an interview with Gabe Ripley, and some our favorite guest artists!

You can find the magazine pretty much anywhere, so there's no excuse in not picking one up! hahaha thanks for looking and finding out more about us in the November issue of Skin and Ink!

ZOMBIE SLEEVE UPDATE

HI EVERYONE!

Here's an update on a zombie sleeve I'd started a while back. In this sitting we went back into the fast food worker, King of the zombies, tattoo. This is the first pass on this color zombie portrait tattoo. I had alot of fun with this one, it's actually my first color realist type portrait tattoo... definitely learned alot from doing this tattoo and looking forward to getting back into it!

Color snowflake hip tattoo

HI EVERYONE!

I'd like to sincerely thank my clients and friends who've stuck with me and followed me from 66 Ink in CT to OFF THE MAP in Easthampton, MA. It means the world to me and know that I truely appreciate your loyalty from the beginning. Jenn, a client that has several tattoos from me has reminded of how great these bonds are. I've known both her and her two daughters for a couple of years now and have tattooed the three of them. The other day she brought her sister, Julie in to get her first tattoo. Not only was it a fun tattoo to do but being around the two of them is an absolute blast! I want to thank everyone who's followed me through the years, my current clients, and my future clients for deciding to have me bring their ideas to life and skin! For these things I am honestly humbled.

Here's the tattoo I did for Julie. It's a color snowflake hip tattoo. The tattoo was done is a illustrated quasi photorealistic style. Thanks for looking!

the start of something great

HEY EVERYONE!

So the studio's back up and running and I finally feel like I'm getting back into the groove after the awesome Paradise Tattoo Gathering in Keystone, CO. Altitude does some funny things to a person.

Anyways here's a piece that is the second installment of what will eventually be, the client, Nicole's awesome backpiece! This is the right shoulder of her upper back, on her left is the black and grey barn owl tattoo that can be found in my portfolio section.  We're continuing her upper to mid back with a flora anatomical head and pear blossoms. This picture is after the first sitting on the head. Can't wait to get back into this and continue the journey.

Holy Smokes Tattoo Revolution!

Hey Everyone!

So yesterday it was brought to my attention by Gabe Ripley, that one of my tattoos was published in the phenominal TATTOO REVOLUTION magazine. I'm very honored and would like to thank them for picking one of my personal favorites (that was for a great client Nicole) for their OCTOBER 2012 issue. I love reading their magazine and especially enjoy this month's tutorial by Emil. If you get a chance, I highly recommend picking up a copy, it is a U.K. based publication, but very well worth the effort in trying to get you hands on one! Thank you again TATTOO REVOLUTION for this huge honor.  Also thank you to TATTOONOW.com for making uploaded hi-res images easily accessable to magazines and the public. They'll have a seminar at the Paradise Tattoo Gathering if you had any questions or interest in getting a membership and website through this great company... well worth it!

Here's the proof of my first individually published picture in the magazine! Still hard to believe!

3 FREEHAND SKULLS IN 3 DAYS part 3

Hey everyone!

Here's the third installment of the "3 freehand skulls in 3 days" series. The client approached me wanting a skull turning into a a baseball splitting apart. He also wanted to have crossed bone bats and somehow incorporate the white sox  logo. It was quite a bit to put into one tattoo but here's what I came up with!  A... insert hopeful google hit lines!...black and grey skull tattoo baseball tattoo white sox tattoo shoulder tattoo skull half sleeve tattoo. Hope it gets alot of views, I was really happy with the way that this one came out! Thanks for looking and thank you for continuing to follow my news items and looking through my portfolio!

Cheers!

3 FREEHAND SKULLS IN 3 DAYS part 2

Hey Everyone!

The other night, for the first time in my career another tattoo artist asked me to tattoo him. This artist was the visiting guest artist Tyler Jones. When he approached me with the idea of doing a skull for him I was initially shocked.... I think the first thing I said was "Really?! You want ME to tattoo you?!" He told me that the skull I'd done the day before sealed the deal for him. After the butterflies calmed down and reality set in I was very honored at his request, and equally humble to work on someone who until that night said he would only collect from Jeff Gogue. It was a great time tattooing Tyler and I had the sincere pleasure to get to know alot about him in a relaxed after hours setting. I hope we see more of eachother in the future.

Here's installement numero dos of my 3 days of 3 skulls freehanded using a "from life" reference approach. This one on a great guy and tattoo artist, Tyler Jones. I'm really looking forward to doing more of these in the future, if this is something you might be interested don't hesitate to get in touch!

3 FREEHAND SKULLS IN 3 DAYS part 1

HEY EVERYONE!

A wierd and really exciting thing happened to me this past week, I had the opportunity to tattoo 3 skulls in 3 consecutive days!  It was the perfect opportunity to try something that I've been wanting to for a long time now. I used a real human skull that I'd purchased a few months back. I set it up as a still life model and used it for a "from life" reference during the tattoo process. The same process if I were painting or drawing from life. In the preliminary sketching stages I assumed the Hamlet monologue pose...hahaha...with the skull in my left hand and a marker in the other.

On day one or the first installment of the 3 skulls was an addition to the legend of Sisyphus sleeve. I did an astrolabe (google it... they're awesome! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astrolabe ) and skull black and grey shoulder cap arm tattoo. I freehanded the skull from life and stenciled the astrolabe. I didn't get to fully finish the astrolabe in this sitting, but i blocked in the back side, which still has a neat graphic effect.

I hope you're as excited about this series of skulls and this tattoo as I am!!! This was a big step for me! I had an absolute blast challenging myself to push my artistic skills, approach to tattooing, and comfort levels further!!!

Wing neck tattoo

Hey Everyone!

Today was an absolute day of relaxation... Wow had I forgotten how nice it was  to slow down and enjoy the beauty of the day. It's slightly bittersweet though, knowing how it's the last and how things in the next few months will be fast paced, high stress, and insanely productive.  Here we go, supremely beautiful while it lasted!!!

Here's a walk-in neck tattoo I got the chance to do. I don't do too many neck tattoos and even talking to people that do them often... they don't get any easier. The part that was me in this piece was the addition of the wing and lavender accents, the "blessed" was already present. Thanks for looking, and please feel free to browse my galleries!!

cheers!

Cherry Blossoms!

Hey Everyone!

So getting back into the swing of things after getting back from Utah. This week has been definitely been fun! Working with great clients and ouside of work... having to house sit a nice big homestead! I've also been stumbling upon great and interesting reference photos of things i'd love to tattoo.... Realized I've never tattooed a close up of an eye!!! I found all sorts of neat feminine eyes with crazy makeup and other fun elements. Looking forward to doing something along these lines... wink wink... If this is up your alley, go ahead and fill out an online consultation form! I dare ya!

Here's a fresh tattoo from today. It's of a black and grey with color tattoo, infinte symbol tattoo made out of a cherry blossom branch tattoo... tattoo... one more for good measure! These black and grey with color elements have been really fun, exciting and challenging, hope I get to do more of these in the future too! Thank you for looking, hope you like it!

Home sweet home

Hey Everyone!

So I'm back from the first annual Park City Tattoo Convention safe and sound! It was great to see and be around friendly faces again, and to make new acquaintances! Park City Utah is a beautiful place, interesting in the summer but i can only imagine the seemingly empty town packed to the brim with wintersports tourists during it's on season. It's nice to be home.

During the convention I had the chance to work on one, ONE VERY BIG, tattoo. I had the honor to complete a sleeve on a great client named Chad. We started the tattoo on Saturday worked for 8 hours and he champion rallied the next day and sat for another 5.5 to finish it off.

Here's a sneak peek of his completed black and grey leaf scroll filligree tattoo sleeve. The top healed section was done by the very talented Megan Hoogland. Thanks for looking.

UTAH OPEN DOORS!

Hey Everyone!

So landed safe and sound in Salt Lake City late last night after a good long day of travel. Both Brian from Tattoonow.com and I were still able to rally and meet an old childhood friend of mine who lives in Park City. Park City is an interesting town... very different in that it's a ski town and the normal population of some 7000 residents to over a million in the winter seasons.

All that reflection aside... THE DOORS ARE OPEN FOR THE FIRST ANNUAL PARK CITY TATTOO CONVENTION!!!! WHERE ARE YOU AND WHY AREN'T YOU HERE ALREADY!? HOPE TO SEE YOU SOON! AND CAN"T WAIT TO SEE AND MAKE YOUR TATTOO DREAMS A REALITY!

Here's a pic of Canyon Webb from Off The Map- Northwest and I at opening time! Come join the shinnanigans!!!!!

No new news to really report other than it's my first day back at Crossfit! Really great to get back to the slow and painful process of getting back into shape. Tattooing really takes it's toll on the body. Not only is your tattoo artist hunched over working on the tattoo, but they were probably in the same possition drawing the tattoo... lots of sitting.  On top of our drive for pure posture and chronic back issues... the majority of us eat shit (not literal shit), we eat what's fast, more often than not, delivered. There was a panel on this topic, led by Durb Morrison, at Paradise a few years back... Youtube, or even better get the "Keeping Sharp" DVD through TattooNow.com or TattooEducation.com!

Here's a quick foot lettering tattoo i did not too long ago. I enjoy doing script and was happy with how clean this turned out... especially for being on the footz.

ZOMBIEESSSS

HEY EVERYONE!

I survived! it's been a week or so since i've update... womp womp. But i survived the knee armageddon brought on by the hands of Kelly Doty. Not healed yet so no pictures. It's been hard taking a week off of Crossfit... even though i haven't done it for all that long, the stuff's addicting.

Here's a cityscape or city of  zombies sleeve tattoo that i started the other night. For this session I just sketched in the main shoulder and outside of the upper arm. The end product will be a fully rendered in color. Also for this session I didn't put in the flaming falling zombie from the exploding building above... it'll be placed right behind the "BURGER KING ZOMBIE! KING OF THE ZOMBIES!!!"

Canadian Maple leaves part 2

Hey everyone!

So yesterday I had tot alknee annihalation by the very talented and truely inspiring, Ms. KELLY " i"ll cut-a-bitch" DOTY! I'll be posting the healed picture in a week or so. I really can't thank her enough for doing this for me.

Here's a picture of a tattoo from the other day, its a work in progress of Fall/Autumn Canadian maple leaves. I'd posted the first sitting a month or so ago. Here it is after the first layer of color. Can't wait to get back into it and do one more polish and detail pass to do on it! Be sure to check out some of my new uploads in the tattoo gallery! Thanks for looking!

cheers!

Taino pride tattoo

hey everyone!

Yesterday was a really great day and full of surpises. The big one being that I was able to work with a client that I hadn't seen in 6+ months! It was wild to see the progression that's been made in my work, the techniques that i use and the speed at which i get things done. Since starting at Off The Map it's done nothing but improve, mostly in part to the opportunies that Gabe and Mary have set in place and offer, and what it is you do with that information. It's what sites and communties like TattooNow.com, Tattooeducation.com and the Paradise events are all about!

Some of the other great suprises yesterday were my girlfriend dropping off an awesome frog cake while I worked on a frog tattoo, how great Tim Senecal is recovering and back at tattooing, and that the new indian place in Easthampton makes damn good papadams and spicy food!

Here's the tattoo I did on the client I mentioned earlier. We're working on what can be called a Taino or Puerto Rican theme pride half sleeve tattoo. In this sitting we did a photorealistic black and grey coqui frog tattoo subtly blending into a taino frog symbol tattoo. This is the first sitting on this inner arm tattoo and I can't wait to do another pass on it. The amount of positive feedback I recieved on Instagram for this tattoo also came as a pleasant suprise. If you have an Instagram account or if you've downloaded the new TATTOONOW APP, you should follow the daily postings by yours truly!

Thanks for looking and hope to see you in the studio soon!

cheers!

BADASSES

hey everyone!

So the other day our very own Tim Senecal returned to work! After dealing with a damaged knee from an epic 3 leggeed race that saved the earth, he finally has had his surgery. And in a matter of maybe a week, the chuck norris of tattooing has returned to OTM. He's been more than missed in his absence, and I along with the rest of the OTM team are more than excited to have him back! It's not the same without the other old man in the balcony. WELCOME BACK TIM!!!

I've realized at this point I'm not the biggest fan of putting up a news item without something to look at. I'll continue to try and keep up with posting a picture of some form of art with every postng. And since we're on the topic of badass here's a black work clint eastwood stencil tattoo i did the other day. It was really fun during the process to see a series of abstract shapes and dots transform into a recognizable human form.  Thanks for looking and be sure to check out my tattoo gallery or contact me if you'd like to get tattooed!

cheers!

06.26.12

apple branch and bounty tattoo

Hey Everyone!

Here's an update on a work in progess tattoo.... it's pretty much complete.... just a polish pass to do on this gem! Really excited to add the color apple and blossom tattoos  to the black and gray apple branch tattoo. I hope that I get a chance to do more of these color fruit on black and grey nature backgrounds in the future... oranges and orange blossoms maybe?! This tattoo really brought me back when I used to work in an apple orchard in CT, and how free I felt to just walk out and grab lunch off the trees.

Thanks for looking and hope you're as excited to see how this turns out as i am! be sure to check out the tattoo gallery section of the site!

cheers!

color phoenix coverup tattoo

Hi everyone!

This week at the shop we have a great guest artist and good friend of mine Shane Baker! It's great to be working along side of him this week and I look forward to doing more conventions with him these following seasons!

Here's a sneak peek after the first sitting of a work in progress  cover-up tattoo. The client came to me with a small phoenix that didn't meet her expectations and wanted to have me do a much larger and biasly better color phoenix tattoo. We still have quite a way to go and am really looking forward to get back into it! Thanks for looking and checking out my galleries!!!

06.19.12

Thistle and shamrock cover-up tattoo

HEY EVERYONE!

So this past week, we at Off The Map had the very awesome Marvin Silva guest-spotting . It was really great to see my friend and occasional convention booth compadre! I gained alot from the two of us being able to sit down at the end of the day and talk about life... great advice on how to achieve a positive balance and time management in both my professional and personal lives. Very sad to have to say goodbye but am excited to see him again at this year's Paradise Tattoo Gathering!

Here's a cover-up tattoo I started the other night... the end result with be a color 1/4 sleeve of thistles tattoo and shomrocks tattoo! More than excited on how the first sitting went and can't wait to get back into this again!

06.16.12

Dragon sleeve progress

Hey Everyone!

Here's an in progress piece that i've had sitting waiting to post in a news item for a few weeks. The client approached me wanting to get his first tattoo, and that first tattoo being a sleeve. Here's the upper portion blocked in. this is a really fun black and grey midieval dragon shoulder and arm tattoo. We will be adding a photorealistic black and grey castle tattoo on the interior to finish of the upper portion.

I really enjoy doing tattoos like this, so if you've anything similar or even have a great idea for you next tattoo, don't hesitate to contact!

THANKS FOR LOOKING, HOPE YOU ENJOY!!!

new skull tattoo

Hi Everyone!

SO I LOVE DOING SKULL TATTOOS! if anyone ever has an ink-ling of getting one,PLEASE DON'T HESITATE TO CONTACT ME!  about a month or two ago i purchased a beautiful skull from overseas... i've drawn it a few times and have been dying to work with it more. the beauty in it is that it has one side with all of it's teeth and the other half without, leaving great textural cavities.  about a week ago i started this peice using my new skull.  this photo is after out first sitting on a motorcycle bio-mech skull tattoo. there's still a ways to go and it's lacking the white highlights... can't wait to go back into it!

thanks for looking and checking out the galleries!

06.13.12

hey everyone!

here's a piece i started today. it's part of a black and grey athena  sleeve tattoo. the sleeve's on a great chef, chris, who work at a fantastic french bistro in northampton, ma.  i'll be waiting until the sleeve's complete to post the finalized photos, but until then here's a teaser. this owl and olive branch tattoo was drawn on with tombo markers. today was the first block in session for the piece. can't wait to get back into it.

06.11.12

apple branch

hey everyone!

so it's been about a week or so since i've updated last. here's something that i started a week or so ago on a great client, who also happens to be an accomplished pastry chef. this is after a first sitting... the plan of attack is to keep the branch and leaves in black and grey and make the apples and apple blossoms in color. i'm excited to see what the finished product will look like!

thanks for looking!

06.04.12

Canadian Maple leaves

Hey everyone!

here's a pic of a forearm tattoo i started yesterday. it was wild to see a client that i'd worked on when i first did my guest spot at off the map! it was so much fun to see my progression in the last 8/10 months. it was so great to catch up and get the chance to do a really fun maple leaves fore- arm tattoo. i drew this one on and  in this sitting i just layed out the first pass on the linework, background and basic black in the leaves. can't wait for the next sitting when we'll be laying down the color.

thanks for looking and checking out the galleries! if you have any great ideas for tattoos, don't hesitate to contact me through the website or by calling the studio @ (413) 527-6574 to set up a FREE CONSULTATION!!!

filigree

hey everyone!

here's a piece i started last night, on a old classmate from back home. it was nice to have the opportunity to reminisce and joke about highschool and middleschool.

i drew the basic shapes and masses right on the skin and did a lot of machine sketching in the process. i really enjoyed the freedom it gave me! i haven't done much filigree recently and it was so nice to get back into it. i really do enjoy both drawing and tattooing filigree, hopefully more comes my way!

thanks for looking! hope to hear from you soon!

FUTURE PROJECTS

HI EVERYONE!

so i recently organized alot of the random reference i've stashed in my computer and came across a series of momento mori inspired sculptural images. looking through them i realized alot of them would look great as black and grey tattoos. alot of them are sculptures from graveyards, so some of them are sort of religious. I would love to tattoo anything from that series... sorry i won't post them up here  but to give you an idea of what they are here's a list: sculptures of: cherabs, hooded/ shawled women, angels, stained glass, cathedrals and an images that i'd love to do of death, in a human/ skeleton form carrying/holding a beautiful woman.

i've also been mulling and beginning to layout a black and grey sleeve that has a very famous french cathedral and a literary masterpiece associated with it.... really excited about it!

IF ANY OF THESE SPARK YOU INTEREST OR IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU HAVE A GREAT TATTOO IDEA, DON'T HESITATE TO GET IN TOUCH! LOOK FORWARD TO HEARING FROM YOU!

also uploaded a few new pieces in my tattoo gallery, thanks for looking and hope you like them!

CHEERS!

BACK FROM PARADISE

so this year's paradise artist retreat was the most inspiring yet! everything from the venue to the collective demeanor was nothing but placid. on a personal note... looking back at where i was from my first artist retreat to now is night and day.  i am so fortunate to be where i am now. it's been a week or two of reflection to really appreciate my position in life.... pretty Fing awesome!

On a more professional and work related note, before i get all choked up, i've been having the opportunity to work on some really awesome projects! and it's time to share a few!  the first in this set is a momento mori sleeve that a really great guy ryan had approached me about a few months back. He found me on the internet  and contacted me via email!  he was the first person to do it and get something done! hope the trend continues... wink wink nudge nudge.

Thank you for reading and looking though the galleries. hope you enjoy!!!

More projects!!

hi everyone!

as promised here's another work in progress black and grey work! this is after the first pass/ sitting on the whole piece. in this on the client wanted a barn owl and.... something else... she had been very non specific. for the background i used a close-up of a pinecone and pine needles. i used the long swooping form of an out of focus needle to bring flow into the tattoo and carry in a little negative space. i also like in much of my recent work am incorporating a disjointed broken mirror effect, which slightly shifts the image... i love the direction my tattoos are taking, by incorporating this quasi diagrammatic abstract break effect! i'd love to do more of this sort of black and grey work and incorporating this effect.

hope you enjoy what you see! be sure to check out my porfolio section! thanks for spending the time and looking at my work!!!

new works in progress

hey everyone!

here are some of my newer black and grey works in progress... i'll be posting a few more in the next week... even bigger and black and greyier... if that makes any sense.  from now on all of my in progress stuff i'll be presenting in greyscale, just to emphasise the distinction between the finished and unfinished pieces.

i'll also have been updating my portfolio and will continue to do so in the very near future so be sure to check them out!

Thank you for looking at my work and hope you enjoy the work!!!

Happy holidays

Hi everyone! I realize the wishes are a few days late, but who cares if you wish someone good fortune and happiness... It should happen more often really anyway... Off the tangent. It seems like these past few weeks have been filled with old customers, festivities and starting new and exciting pieces! Today especially I was able to tattoo around something that I had done when I first started two years ago... Man what a difference! It's so humbling to see my old work and realize the wealth of knowledge, a fraction of which i've absorbed, that has helped me get to the place I'm at now. Especially now being a resident artist at Off The Map and being exposed to new lessons and mentors! Hope everyone had a safe and happy holiday! Thanks for reading!

in the works

hey everyone!

here are a few of my recent works in progress. i've recently had an influx of large black and grey tattoos which i'm extremely thankful for! i've been doing everything from a religious virgin mary rib tattoo to a floral filigree and old books thigh tattoo. i really enjoy the mix and will be applying my love of the sculptural aesthetic to each! can't wait to work on these again and hope to have more black and grey statue or sculpture oriented tattoos in the future!

thanks for reading and hope you enjoy my uploads and galleries!

Classy tattoos

MAN DO I LOVE BLACK AND GREY! Just finished a two days of back to back LARGE black and grey tattoos, and couldn't be happier! After hours upon hours  of preparation and drawing, I finally started them. Both very classy and timeless. One a virgin mary side/rib tattoo,  the other was filigree wrapping around and through two large old books which filled up the entire thigh.  I'll be posting in progress pictures soon.

-thanks for reading and browsing my galleries!

DORE'

so i bought a few gustave dore' print books and a massive michelangelo reference book... and needless to say they're really inspiring. I'd be really into doing a tattoo from any of these and translating it into the skin! wink wink nudge nudge

can't wait to hear your ideas!
